Are we civilized? No. Because, in a civilized society, one human being does not strip the respect and dignity of another human being. The world is advancing in science, engineering, technology. So is it shamefully forging ahead in crime, atrocity and sexual harassment done to women. If we do an arbitrary news archival study, we will find fortnightly happenings of cases such as public stripping, rape, molestation, harassment at study or workplace. Remember, these are only the ones that are reported. There are thousands which go unreported. They happen in all states across India, in villages, towns, cities and metros.

What happens next? Media and activists pressurize the Government to take action. The concerned officials are transferred. The case is heard in the courtroom infinite number of times. The victim, convict and the public alike are tired of everything, by the time the verdict is passed. There cannot be a single woman who has not faced an act of sexual harassment in her life. It may be verbal, gesticular or physical. It may happen during any part of her life.

Why does this happen? Because women are not treated equally, fearing their superiority they are kept submissive, women are considered objects of pleasure, than human beings worthy of respect and dignity.

What do we do? Every one of us, man, woman or transgender, have a responsibility towards the issue. We have to simply raise our concerns and ensure the safety of the girl / woman involved. The strength of the criminal engaging in the act is the ‘why do I care’ attitude of the bystander.
Popular belief is that sexual favors are sought only in certain sectors of the society. Actually, it happens wherever there are noxious human beings. If we think the police or law will step to weed them out, we are mistaken. The law takes action only after the act is over. However, we are more powerful, because we can avert the act itself.

When we see, hear or know a girl/woman is being teased, harassed at study or workplace, let us act to strengthen the victim and weaken the criminal. When we act, we will curb the crime rate. We are larger in number than the ones prowling to commit the act.

We should don responsible roles to eradicate crime against women. We should believe that the situation is very much in our hands and that we can control it perfectly. That is the truth.
